In late afternoon in Winter
starling flocks will congregate
and make a cloud-like formation
before settling at their roosting site
Noise at dawn
an exit
in waves
they can be tracked by radar

To
the Birds
To
the birds
that darken the sky at dusk
the ghosts of caged birds
haunt the city
long gone rookeries of London
those that roost along disused
railway paths
In the darkest hour there may be light
song disturbs
morning silence
the thrush that sang for three years in Wood Street
shaped trackside
footprints in the snow
a reminder that we are still alive

Clamour
Copse stark naked at the turn of the year
branches silhouetted
across the darkening sky
a clamour of rooks head home

The
Familiar
Blackbird
shifts its shape through the undergrowth
makes its presence known
hours earlier they waited for the cloak of death
its flight into the window of the room where he died a sign
waxed winged outline imprinted through the early light of
dawn
still they sat until the ambulance came
for weeks the outline remained on the unwashed window

fighter plane attack, rook shifts

on wing a lightness in death
lanes split swallows fly past
as if on guard and to guide
